Residents may not initially think about working, or consider that this is a realistic possibility for them. Throughout their placement they are encouraged and supported to develop sufficient skills and confidence to enable them to see a realistic working future.
Residents are encouraged to participate in a number of voluntary work opportunities to help them identify what type of work they would eventually want to do. For our current residents this has included conservation and gardening work, clerical work, retail work, painting and decorating, joinery, and building work. Keyworkers work in conjunction with external agencies such as Bootstrap and the Volunteer Bureau to undertake work skills assessments with residents. In addition to identifying qualifications and work experience, these assessment help residents recognise the skills that they already have and identify goals to increase their employability.
